A stunning 100M in Florida Green/Ivory White

HISTORY

This 1956 Austin-Healey 100M was built on Feruary 3rd, 1956 as a LHD, North American export. The destination is recorded as USA but the dealership is not specified on the BMIHT certificate. Painted Florida Green and Ivory White with black trim and top, we know it arrived at the Crandall-Hicks Austin-Healey dealership in Boston sometime in early April 1956. The car had been ordered by its first owner, Mr. Salamandra, as a Factory-built 100M in Green/OEW. Expecting Spruce Green, the new owner was quite surprised at the new Florida Green colour as was the dealership. Mr. Salamandra traded his 1954 Austin-Healey 100 on this 100M and took delivery of his new acquisition on April 17, 1956. He then drove and rallied his 100M until November 1959, accumulating 29,451 miles. He then put the car in storage until 1969, when it was taken out and driven until the fall of 1975, bringing the mileage to 33,631 miles. He reported that on January 10, 1973, the speedometer cable shaft broke and an estimated 2295 miles were added through May 4, 1973. Mileage was now 35,926 miles.

It was once again placed in dry storage until 1994, when its original owner decided to sell it to his neighbour and friend Mr. Alfano. As an Austin-Healey enthusiast, Mr. Alfano owned several 100M's but never registered or drove his acquisition. in 2006, it changed hands again, purchased by Mr. Averka, who began some mechanical restoration but never drove the car. When Mr. Averka did not complete his project, he opted instead to sell the car to its current owners, R. & J. Hicks, in June 2011. At the time the Hicks owned four other Austin-Healeys, one of them being another 1956 100M. Mr. Hicks then spent time getting Irene running and in driveable condition. A decision had to be made whether to preserve this 100M or to totally restore it. With the help of friend and marque specialist Tom Kovacs of Fourintune Garage, it was decided to do a very sympathetic complete restoration with an emphasis on originality. Thus, in May 2012, Irene was shipped to Fourintune in Wisconsin. By September of that year, it was completely dissambled and any corrosion shown was removed and replaced with new material. Careful attention to detail and originality determined the course of action to follow and resulted in a stunning example of the marque. The restoration was completed in early July of 2013, after which some 300 test miles were completed with no issues. Since then the car has been shown at several venues and Concours. The Hicks have now decided that this car should be entrusted to another caretaker.
